Topic               Immigration: Myth Busting for People Managers
Date:               Tuesday 16th June 2015

Time:               from 8.30am to 9.30am

Venue:            Dutton Gregory, St Peter Street, Winchester. SO23 8BT

Speaker          Kitty Falls

“Immigration” was consistently rated as a top voter concern in the run-up to the General Election. Even before the Queen’s speech the new Conservative government rushed to make more commitments about immigration law.

But how much do you really know about immigration to the UK? Where do most immigrants come from? What are their aims in coming here? What do they say about their experiences?

In this session we will discuss what “immigration” and “immigration law” mean for people managers. Kitty will focus on “myth busting” a selection of recent stories about immigration to the UK from the last few months. Some are news stories and some are opinions and experiences that she has picked up through her extensive work in this field.

Participants will be encouraged to add their own experiences and opinions to the debate, not just in terms of the dry practicalities of photocopying passports and sponsoring employees, but in understanding what it means to be an “immigrant” in the UK now.

Kitty Falls is Dutton Gregory’s immigration law specialist. She has spent the last 10 years as a solicitor advising businesses and private individuals about immigration and employment law. She is a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association, and a regular contributor to legal publications and blogs about immigration law in the UK.

Discussion is welcome on these lively and challenging issues.
