Black Friday has made its way across the pond to the UK and the frenzied week of mega-deals marks the start of the Christmas shopping period.

We were sent this report comparing figures from the UK to Norway:

Mendo UK Weekly Retail Report

Week Ending 27th November: Black Friday in Norway and the UK

This week ending 27th November was the week where the Christmas shopping formally starts and includes Black Friday. The figures from UK and Norway are:

Week ending 27th November compared to previous week (WE 20th Nov):

UK
All retail categories:                                  +12%
Clothes, Shoes & Travel Effects:              +19%
Speciality Stores:                                      +9%
Home & Interiors:                                      +12%

Norway
All retail categories:                                  +36%
Clothes, Shoes & Travel Effects:              +35%
Speciality Stores:                                      +49%
Home & Interiors:                                      +1%

In addition, the year-on-year figures from Norway show that 2016 is up 6% on the same week last year.

The results are not surprising as many shops experienced less in-store traffic this year compared to last year in the UK, with online sales gaining even more market-share in 2016. Norway has been slower to adopt Black Friday and we would expect to see the Norwegian high-street retailers reaching a peak in the next year or two and then losing the Black Friday effect as shoppers go online.

Mendo will publish a comprehensive report in January looking day-by-day on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Christmas shopping period for the high street. More information on how to obtain this report will follow in mid-December.

* Please note that the information provided in the weekly reports are based on the data inputted before 8am GMT every Thursday of the following week.
