Members of the public are being offered the opportunity to nominate local heroes to help switch on Winchester’s Christmas lights.

The annual Winchester Christmas Lights Switch On will take place this year on Thursday 14 November 2019 in The Broadway outside the Guildhall from 4pm.

This year’s event will be hosted by Heart Radio’s Jonny Meah. Join him for an evening of festive fun and live performances from The Pilgrims’ School Chamber Choir, The Spitfire Sisters, Harestock Primary School Choir, Integr8 Dance, Theatre Royal Winchester, Rock Choir, Winchester A Capella, the University of Winchester Buskers Society and Body Translation Dance. This year’s kind sponsor of the Winchester Christmas Lights Switch On is Dutton Gregory Solicitors.

As part of the community-focused event, organisers Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) have launched a ‘search for local heroes’ campaign, supported by Winchester Radio, to find Winchester stars to help switch on the festive lights. On the night, the countdown will begin just before 6pm, when the local heroes will help press the giant switch-on button that will light up the city.

Market stalls hosted by local businesses will line the lower part of the High Street in the run-up to The Broadway, where the main stage and the giant screen will be located. As an addition this year, there will also be a Giant Inflatable Snow Globe installed in The Square from 2pm to 8pm. Santa’s sleigh will be located outside the Guildhall.

Sarah Davis, Winchester BID’s Projects and Operations Manager, said:

“We are delighted to be coordinating the switch on festivities for another year.  A big thank you to the headline sponsor Dutton Gregory. This is a fun-filled family community event that brings together the entire city of Winchester. It is also the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on the local community heroes, which is why we will be searching for well-deserving local people to help switch on this year’s Christmas lights.

On the night, we will be encouraging the public to get involved with the celebrations on social media too, to tag their photos and posts with #FestiveWinch and #WinchLights so we can repost and share the fun.”
