Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) has proudly unveiled a newly-painted bollard in The Square in Winchester outside of Pavilion, dedicated to the late Ken Macartney.
Ken, a local businessman and former Chair of Winchester BID tragically died in an accident in February 2020. He joined the BID’s Board of Directors in April 2008 after opening Pavilion in The Square in 2007 with his wife Mandy, a shop that offers women and men designer fashion. Ken was Chair of the Board between 2012 and 2019 and the current Board members agreed that dedicating one of the painted bollards in The Square outside the shop to his memory was a fitting tribute. The bollard was painted in the style of Monet’s Water Lilies by local artist Rachael Alexander who is based at The Colour Factory.
Mandy Macartney, Ken’s wife, said:
“Monet’s Water Lilies was a painting that has a special place in our hearts. We visited the gardens at Giverny in France on a family holiday. We also saw the original paintings in Paris and a print hangs in our house. Ken loved the water and the place evoked a great feeling of peace and tranquillity. The bollard is a beautiful tribute to a very special person. Situated in The Square in Winchester, it is a place he called home and where he will always be remembered.”
Dr Paul Spencer, Executive Director of Winchester BID, said:
“We are very pleased to have been able to work with Mandy and artist Rachael Alexander to create this piece of public art in The Square outside of Pavilion, in memory of Ken. He was our colleague and friend, and we remember him fondly for his outstanding leadership within the local business community and his passion for Winchester.”
