Winchester BID have received the following update surrounding the refurbishment of the Winchester Bus Station:
When Winchester Bus Station reopens in September, the buses will not be driving along the lower part of the High Street but will instead be travelling through the bus station (from the Broadway to Friarsgate), along Tanner Street and access the bus stops on St George’s Street. For this to happen, an experimental order will be coming into place in two phases. The first phase on the 21st August will see some traffic restrictions placed in Tanner Street, this includes a loading ban on the whole road and the removal of the taxi feeder lane (please note the taxi bay outside of Sainsbury’s remains as it is). This will ensure unobstructed access for the buses when the start using the new route.
The second phase of the experimental order (after the bus station has reopened) will prevent all motor vehicles from travelling up the High Street between 10am and 4pm (7 days a week). Middle Brook Street (between M&S and Sainsburys’) will become cyclists only at all times. The bus stop outside M&S will be relocated to behind M&S on St George’s Street ( and these works will take place at the end of August).
As it is an experimental order, the order will come into force and the public have six months to comment/object. The order is on an experimental basis for a maximum of 18 months before deciding whether it is to become permanent.
